FAQ

Common questions

Straight answers on what the law requires and what we deliver.

How often must fire extinguishers be serviced in South Africa?
Every portable fire extinguisher must be serviced at least once every 12 months, in terms of SANS 1475-1 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The service may only be performed by a technician registered with SAQCC Fire. Extinguishers also require hydraulic pressure testing at longer intervals — every 5 years for most types, and every 10 years for CO2 units.
Who is allowed to issue a fire compliance certificate?
Only a company registered to service fire equipment, using technicians registered with SAQCC Fire. A certificate issued by an unregistered contractor may be rejected by your insurer or by the local authority — which means that in the event of a claim, you are treated as having had no certificate at all. Always ask for the technician's SAQCC registration number.
What happens if my fire equipment is not compliant?
Three things, in rising order of cost. The local fire department can serve a notice and, in serious cases, close the premises. Your insurer can reduce or repudiate a fire claim on the grounds that a condition of cover was not met. And under the OHS Act, the employer carries personal liability for the safety of people in the building.
Do you work outside Cape Town?
Yes. We cover the Western Cape — the Cape Town metro, Northern and Southern Suburbs, West Coast, Cape Winelands, Helderberg and Overberg. Outlying areas are covered on scheduled service runs; contact us and we will tell you when we are next in your area.
Can you service equipment you did not supply?
Yes, and most of our servicing work is exactly that. We take over existing installations regularly. We will survey what is on site, tell you honestly what can be serviced and what has reached end of life, and quote before doing any remedial work.
